Description
The University of Maine System (UMS) is seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer to join our IT Infrastructure team. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the University’s information systems, data resources, and infrastructure.
As part of a distributed security operations and incident response team, the Cybersecurity Engineer collaborates across UMS campuses to prevent, detect, and respond to cybersecurity threats, keeping our community secure and resilient.

What You’ll Do
As a pivotal member of our distributed security operations and incident response team, you will:
- Configure and maintain network security devices, including firewalls, IDS/IPS, and VPN gateways.
- Implement and monitor security policies and controls across the enterprise.
- Conduct risk and vulnerability assessments for networks and computing systems.
- Analyze and integrate security requirements into system designs and operations.
- Perform penetration testing, incident response, and forensic analysis.
- Collaborate on cybersecurity engineering projects, software enhancements, and infrastructure improvements.
- Participate in the UMS:IT incident response team to respond to and mitigate security events.
- Evaluate and design security models for centralized data centers and enterprise applications.

Location: This position is based on the University of Maine's Orono campus, with travel to other campuses as needed. A hybrid work schedule may be available.
Schedule: The standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, occasional evening and weekend work may be required, along with availability during off-hours for scheduled and unscheduled activities and after-hours calls.
Salary: The hiring range for this position is $80,000 to $85,000 (non-negotiable) and is commensurate with training, education, and experience.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three to five years of experience supporting a network environment, working with routing, TCP/IP, Internet/Intranet, network security/firewalls and encryption, vulnerability management, and a variety of operating systems.
- Experience with SIEM platforms and network monitoring tools.
- Experience with the operation of site-to-site and client VPN services, IDS/IPS systems, and next-generation firewalls.
- Experience in network penetration testing, application vulnerability assessment, risk analysis, and compliance testing.
- Knowledge of system management disciplines such as security architecture, disaster recovery, network intrusion response, and documentation coordination.
- Knowledge of current cybersecurity issues and technology developments, and trends.
- Knowledge of the nature and sources of cybersecurity threats, methodologies, and technical requirements for devising solutions.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent presentation and consultation skills.
