Description

ABC6 News is seeking a passionate, energized, and highly skilled Content Desk Manager to help lead our daily news operations and elevate our coverage across all platforms. This role blends the responsibilities of a traditional assignment desk manager, digital content editor, and newsroom leader. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, excels at multitasking, and is committed to serving the community with timely, accurate, and meaningful journalism.

Newsroom Leadership & Daily Operations

  • Work closely with the News Director, Executive Producer, and newsroom teams to develop a consistent and strategic coverage plan for daily news and special projects.
  • Lead daily editorial meetings with producers and reporters to shape coverage and set priorities.
  • Coordinate and manage daily crew assignments, schedules, vehicles, and gear.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to reporters, producers, and content staff.
  • Maintain strong community contacts and source networks.

Content Monitoring & Newsgathering

  • Actively monitor police scanners, social media, websites, public safety channels, emails, and other sources for breaking news, significant events, and compelling local stories.
  • Stay well‑informed on local, national, and global developments, with strong understanding of government, legal processes, and public policy.
  • Generate unique, enterprise story ideas and manage long‑term planning.
  • Assist producers and reporters with story research, calls, source tracking, setups, and follow‑ups.

Breaking News Coordination

  • Make fast, accurate decisions during breaking news.
  • Alert newsroom staff, assign field crews, deploy LiveU units, and coordinate multiple live broadcasts.
  • Confirm information quickly and responsibly, prioritizing accuracy over speed while still being aggressive with coverage.

Digital & Social Content

  • Write and publish news stories to the website and social platforms using AP wires, live video, social media content, and newsroom inputs.
  • Utilize a variety of technologies for video capture, editing, file transfers, live cameras, remote interviews, and communication tools.
  • Ensure content is accurate, up‑to‑date, and engaging across all digital platforms.

Communication & Editorial Judgment

  • Maintain constant communication throughout the day regarding story progress, changes, crew assignments, and breaking developments.
  • Consult with newsroom leadership on challenging editorial decisions.
  • Adapt quickly to additional tasks or shifting priorities as needed.

Other Responsibilities

  • Work on assigned special projects and long‑term investigative or enterprise initiatives.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned to support the goals of the newsroom.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly, calmly, and respectfully with teammates of various personalities and others during high-pressure, high-stress situations.
  • A college degree in Communications with an emphasis in Journalism is preferred.
  • Two years of TV/digital newsroom experience is a plus.
  • Must be extremely well organized and detail-oriented.
  • Advanced ability in critical thinking and judgment.
  • Must be able to make good decisions quickly; able to articulate and communicate information and direction to news staff and other station employees.
  • Computer and Social Media skills are a must.
  • Solid exposure to and understanding of the ethics of Journalism.
  • Producer experience is a plus.
  • Commitment, determination, and a strong sense of teamwork.
